The Bucket Brigade
Working a 6 yr old restart mare the second day in the small round pen. Many of the concepts worked on in Horsemanship were introduced in Colt Starting.

Lori (Lynn) starting a 5 yr old horse, Silverhawk (which Jack nicknamed 'Ajax'), the second day in the small RP. She is petting and leaving his head completely alone. Jack is ready to help with the flag if needed.

Setting it up and waiting

Lori learning how to use a hackamore, on a 3 yr old Morgan/Arab Jack brought. The mare is throwing her head because she needs more slack. Jack on his 4 yr old QH, Choppo.

As Lori gives more slack, the mare relaxes and her head drops a bit.

This mare had her first 20 or so rides in the hackamore because her mouth was too sensitive for the snaffle. Now, at 60 rides, she goes well in either.

The mare is following a feel. Reins are not so important when the horse is following your body.

The spectators, mostly participants in Horsemanship, asked lots of questions.

Lori says she is having a 'giggle-butt' ride. The Horsemanship people say they want to have one too!

'Ajax' is pretty satisfied. And Lori doesn't look too unhappy either.

She didn't want this ride to ever end, but it's time to get off.

'Ajax' is rewarded with a hug and a pet.

Jack shows Lori how to tie a lass rope to her saddle before we head out for a mountain trail ride. Maybe she is planning to rope a bear?
